Hunting: Why It's Not a Sport (And What We Can Do to Stop It)
Posted on June 02 2025,
For many, it's still a "tradition." For others, it's even a "sport." But hunting is neither. It's a violent, dangerous, and profoundly unjust practice that continues to claim victims—animals and, often, humans—with the silence or approval of institutions. In this article, we explain why it should be illegal , which laws certain decrees violate, and what we can do together to stop it.
❌ Why hunting is not a sport
Calling a practice that involves the violent death of sentient beings a "sport" is a semantic distortion. A true sport is based on shared rules, fairness between the parties, and the absence of non-consensual violence. None of this exists in hunting.
- Animals have no escape route
- They do not choose to participate
- They suffer trauma, injuries and death in a cruel way
- They pollute the environment with lead and plastic
⚖️ The Lollobrigida Decree: An Attack on Biodiversity
In 2024, Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida introduced a decree that allows hunting even in protected areas and outside of established periods , under the pretext of "wildlife containment".
This decree is in conflict with the principles established by EU Directive 2009/147/EC on the conservation of wild birds , the Bern Convention , and the European Charter on Animal Rights currently being discussed in Brussels.
💬 According to LAV , the decree “violates the right to biodiversity and makes hunting an uncontrolled activity”.
