Sicilian Tradition
Sicily is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful lands in southern Italy. Basked by the Ionian Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the Mediterranean, this island has always been a haven for sailors. Its strategic location, with a mild climate and fertile soil, makes it ideal for the production of vegan products using excellent natural ingredients from the earth , without the need to involve animals or their products.
The fertile soil produces oranges, lemons and mandarins in large quantities, along with almonds, prickly pears, pistachios and olives, all culinary products for which the island excels and is distinguished worldwide.
Following the numerous Greek, Roman, Arab, and Norman occupations, the production of pasta and sweets began, ranging from the most basic, such as almonds with sugar, to the island's specialties. Some of the most well-known foods, spread worldwide, are naturally vegan, without any alteration, and do not use any ingredients of animal origin, such as the famous Sicilian granita.
Sugarcane, citrus fruits , spices , and rice were introduced. The habit of sautéing garlic in olive oil to prepare sauces took hold, and thanks to trade with China and India, eggplants , so dear to Sicilian cuisine, were imported, along with tomatoes, cocoa, and corn from the Americas.
Thanks to its mild climate, the island of Sicily is rich in spices and aromatic plants, such as oregano, mint and rosemary, which still represent a substantial part of Sicilian condiments.
But Sicilian regional cuisine is also what it is thanks to the quality of its raw materials, among which cherry tomatoes and dried fruits (almonds and pistachios) stand out.
All these natural products are naturally vegan and have been used for millennia to create the specialties of the Sicilian tradition, proving that
You can't eat something that has a face.
